Allen and Darden’s Journey:

How End the Wait’s Mission Turned Awareness into a Life-Saving Gift

Five years ago, Allen Johnson was leading a vibrant, active life when a genetic disease suddenly caused his kidneys to fail. Overnight, Allen’s life dramatically changed. He began dialysis treatments, a process that serves as life support for patients with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)—a grueling regimen that often places enormous physical, emotional, and financial stress on patients and their families.

Despite the treatments, Allen’s condition worsened. He was losing hope when the End the Wait Foundation learned of his story. Allen and his wife bravely shared their deeply personal journey in a heartfelt interview featured across our social media platforms. Their courageous storytelling vividly illustrated the harsh reality of dialysis and underscored the urgent need for more live kidney donors.

And their courage paid off.

Darden, a compassionate young man and high school English teacher and wrestling coach, saw Allen’s video and felt moved to help. He selflessly chose to use his spring break to travel for surgery, forever changing Allen’s life. Darden felt called to donate, believing that “we have two kidneys for a reason—one to keep and one to give.” His selflessness embodies the life-changing power of live donation.

In late March, the successful transplant surgery took place in St. Louis. Remarkably, Darden was able to leave the hospital just one day after surgery, healthy and proud to have given such an extraordinary gift. Within hours, Allen felt healthier and stronger than he had in years. Soon after surgery, Allen and Darden were exchanging stories and sharing in the profound experience of their journey. And just one month after his transplant, Allen is back to enjoying the activities he loves—hiking, hunting, and being an active, loving father and grandfather.

Allen and Darden’s story demonstrates the incredible, life-saving power of live kidney donation—and the critical importance of raising awareness. End the Wait aims to inspire 100,000 individuals to follow Darden’s remarkable example.
